What to do if you're stuck in career indecision

What to do if you're stuck in career indecision

Hi! A huge welcome to you from wherever you're watching in the world.

I'm Bec Sands, and I help you pivot to a career or business you love.

Indecision can cause weeks, months or even years of procrastination.

If you're stuck in indecision about your next career step, or what to do in your business, or how to get started, or literally ANY topic in your life, I hear you.

In the past, I felt stuck in indecision for years and years about what to do in my career.

I knew I wanted something different, but I had no idea what my next step should be. For me, it wasn't a lack of ideas about my next steps but it was having WAY TOO MANY ideas.

I worried that if I chose one thing then I'd be ruling out a whole bunch of other ideas that I could be actioning, and that it would hold me back. In fact, what I've realised is that it's the opposite.

We become held back when we try to focus on too many different ideas at once, or when we become stuck in indecision about which idea we want to pursue and end up doing nothing about it.

Here's how to move forward from indecision.

1. How do you want to feel? Will this thing help you to feel this way?

For example, if you want to be relaxed and have a lot of space in your life, perhaps a high-stress role isn't for you. If you're ambitious and want to achieve a lot, a fast-paced career or business might be the right way to go. Remember, you can also tweak the business or career to your own specifications - provided you set it up that way from the start and the organisation supports your requirements!

2. Will the idea bring me joy?

So often, we do things because we 'should' do them or because it's the path that has been laid out for us by our families, school, or society. NEVER do anything because you feel you should. (Unless it's, like, taxes!)

3. Write a pros and cons list about each of your ideas.

What's the worst thing that could happen? Write down in advance what you'd do in that situation if it occurred. How would you handle it? Now, write down what the BEST thing is that could happen. :)

4. Speak to someone who's a few steps ahead of where you want to be.

For example, if you're thinking of a career change, chat with someone in that field. Find out what it's like. Also - find yourself a coach in that space!

5. Make a decision on one thing.

Then take action. If you spread yourself too thinly and try to do everything at once, it's a recipe for overwhelm. Instead, commit to one thing and be fully present with it. Analyse the results before you take your next step.
